Frightened from weird messages

I just received a SIM card with a "new" number, but it seems the number belonged to someone else before. I receive a lot of strange messages from different numbers all the time, which also takes up my messaging budget. Now I was told that the number cannot be changed before a 30 days grace period. What should I best do? The only thing I can think of is to put the card out of the phone and not using it at all. Blocking hundreds of numbers is not feasible obviously.
