Can I check a prepaid card to ensure it is valid without activating?

Hello. I purchased a prepaid 12-month card from Best Buy. I do not need to activate it until December, but I would like to ensure it is not defective before their 30-day return period expires. Is there any way to do this? I know it is rare that a prepaid card is a dud, but I've seen people post here having this problem.
